Ginger Price DDS Offers Oral Cancer Screenings All Year Long

Looking good is certainly a large part of feeling good, but the reverse is equally true. At Ginger Price DDS, we don’t just want you to have perfect teeth; we want you to have a healthy, radiant smile. That’s why we recognize Oral Cancer Awareness Month: to prevent and catch cancer before it has a chance to take away your smile.

What is Oral Cancer Awareness Month?

In 1990, The Oral Cancer Foundation declared April Oral Cancer Awareness Month to encourage doctors and patients to be proactive in preventing, detecting and treating cancer of the mouth. Oral cancer is rarely publicized and doesn’t get a lot of attention in the media  ̶  you may have never even heard of it.

Yet sadly, over 40,000 Americans are diagnosed with oral cancer every year, and only about half of those patients survive longer than five years after diagnosis. This is because most patients don’t seek out screening and treatment until the cancer has become visible to the naked eye, which doesn’t usually happen until the cancer has progressed to stage three or four. Fortunately, it is possible to detect oral cancer earlier, and early detection can boost survival rates up to 90 percent. Routine oral cancer screenings can literally save your life!

Too often, people don’t go to the dentist until they already have a problem. We specialize in addressing our patients’ specific needs, but we also take their whole health into account. Our goal is not only to make sure every client leaves with a beautiful smile, but also to inspire our patients to become proactive in their oral health.  That’s why Ginger Price DDS recommends all patients schedule an oral cancer screening at least once per year.

Who is at Risk for Oral Cancer?

Oral cancer has long been thought of as an older man’s disease, but the unfortunate truth is that oral cancer doesn’t discriminate. Smokers, heavy drinkers, patients with the human papillomavirus, and those over 40 are at a higher risk, but recent statistics indicate that oral cancer is on the rise for women, non-smokers and young people.

You can take the following measures to lessen your risk:

-Do not smoke anything or use chewing tobacco

-Drink alcohol in moderation or avoid it altogether

-Include a variety of vegetables and fruits in your diet

-Avoid exposing your lips to excessive sunlight

-Keep regular dentist appointments

What are the Symptoms of Oral Cancer?

Early symptoms often go unnoticed because they cause no pain. You could appear to have no symptoms but still have cancer; however, there are some red flags that can indicate a serious problem. You should seek professional care right away if you experience any of the following symptoms:

-Swelling of the jaw

-Numbness of the mouth

-White or red patches in the mouth or throat

-Thickening of the cheeks or lumps in the cheeks

-Sores inside the mouth that do not heal within two weeks

-Trouble chewing, swallowing or moving your tongue and jaw

Oral Cancer Screenings

The American Dental Association recommends getting screened regularly for oral cancer. If cancer is detected early, you can pursue treatment and have a greatly improved chance of living a normal, healthy and full life. Screening is painless and only takes a few minutes, so there’s no excuse not to take advantage of this potentially life-saving opportunity!
