Are Fizzy Drinks Ruining Your Teeth?

If you enjoy drinks that fizz, you’ll want to be aware of how sodas and other bubbling beverages affect teeth. Drinks with fizz usually contain a blend of acids, including phosphoric and citric acids. With ongoing exposure, this acidic mixture can wear away the enamel on teeth.

Enamel is the hard, protective layer on a tooth’s exterior. When enamel erodes, you are more vulnerable to tooth staining, sensitivity and decay. Dental care may be required to address these issues. Both regular and diet sodas contain acids associated with the erosion. Some drinks without carbonation have them too, like sports drinks, energy drinks and canned teas.

Sipping on acidic drinks throughout the day tends to increase the potential for enamel wear. If sugar is also in the beverage, your teeth receive a double attack. Avoiding or limiting soda is the best defense. When you do enjoy one, here are a few tips:

  • Drink fizzy beverages with meals.
  • Use a straw to reduce exposure.
  • Rinse the mouth with water after drinking.
  • Chew sugarless gum afterward to rebalance the mouth’s acidity level.

You actually want to avoid brushing your teeth right when you finish a soda or sports drink. Neutralize the acids first by rinsing the mouth with water and waiting at least 30 minutes to brush.

Scientific studies have confirmed the link between dental problems and frequent soda intake. The National Institutes of Health published a 2009 study which concluded that consuming soft drinks excessively could cause complex oral health consequences including dental erosion.

Since fizzy, acidic beverages contribute to weak enamel and tooth decay, you’ll want rethink how often you choose them. Remember, Dr. Ginger Price can catch the early signs of enamel erosion in children and adults. She and her team are here to help you protect that essential enamel!
