Braces vs. Invisalign

Home » Blog » Braces vs. Invisalign

If you have a cross bite, overbite or teeth that have gapped or crowded over time, you may be wondering how to get that youthful, movie-star smile. While braces and Invisalign were both designed to straighten teeth and improve oral health, there are many differences to consider when it comes to choosing the right treatment option for you.

Before Invisalign came onto the scene in the spring of 2000, there was really only one option for straightening teeth: braces. Braces have a long history of successfully correcting bite issues and crooked teeth. Many of our patients ask us – what’s the difference between braces and Invisalign? Does Invisalign work on more difficult cases? How do I know which one is right for me?

Both Invisalign and braces do more than just straighten teeth – they dramatically improve your smile and improve the health and longevity of your teeth as well. Let’s look at some of the differences between the two systems.

Braces: How Do They Work?

Braces utilize metal brackets that are glued to your teeth and connected with a wire. When the wire is tightened to the brackets, tremendous torqueing forces are placed on the teeth from the beginning, making the teeth extremely sore and creating pain. This is not to mention the obtrusive nature of all the gear. The metal wires apply continual pressure creating a gradual shift over time. The wires are changed and tightened about every 6 weeks. Maintenance can be very difficult as the brackets attract debris, and limit flossing.

Daily Life with Braces

There is no escaping from braces – they are worn every hour of every day throughout the duration of treatment. For children or young teens who are forgetful or lack personal diligence, braces ensure treatment is completed effectively and on time. Additionally, maintenance involves thorough brushing and flossing—but the hardware limits food choices during the treatment. In addition, the visibility of the gear can be awkward and hard on the self-esteem of both teenagers and adults alike. There is always a danger of plaque etching and scarring the enamel as well as the risk of decay getting underneath the brackets.

Invisalign: How Does It Work?

Invisalign utilizes 3-D computer technology to plan and engineer all tooth movements ahead of time. Once the doctor approves the case, the clear aligners are printed with 3-D printer technology. Each aligner gently moves specific teeth into place, no more than 1 mm at a time. Because the movements are so subtle, there is no pain. Unlike wire braces, the aligners are transparent and removable for brushing, flossing, eating and drinking. Each aligner moves you one step closer to your ideal smile!

Daily Life with Invisalign

Although it is true that some aligners are more snug than others as you go through the process, the gentle nature of the system means little to no discomfort. Because the aligners are removable, you don’t have to go on a restricted diet. Brushing and flossing are normal and easy since you’re not maneuvering around any hardware. Today, because of advanced research and technology, the process is even shorter than ever. Patients are seen every four to six weeks, and appointments normally last around 10-20 minutes.
