Periodontal Treatments
Periodontal treatments can range from preventative treatments to those that address gum diseases such as gingivitis and periodontitis and are an investment in your health. Regular dental care helps prevent periodontal problems and when combined with proper home care helps maintain a sensational smile for a lifetime.
Here at Ginger Price DDS Family Cosmetic Dentistry, our smile dental clinic evaluates your periodontal health and then determines the periodontal treatments that best meet your needs by working to find the least invasive option.
Oral health has been recognized as an often overlooked health priority and an estimated 75% of adults over age 35 have some degree of gum disease. Today it is recognized that there is a relationship between gum disease and health issues such as heart disease, stroke and premature babies.
If caught in the early stages, simple procedures will remove the plaque and calculus from below the gum line and disrupt the infection-causing bacteria. Some of the non-surgical strategies including scaling, root planing (careful cleaning) and sometimes additional therapy such as treatment with antimicrobials.
Scaling is the removal of dental tartar from the surfaces of the teeth while root planing refers to the smoothing of the root surfaces to remove any infected structures of the teeth. If gum disease or gum pocketing exists, the pockets around the teeth will likely contain tartar deposits under the gum line.
Periodontal disease is chronic bacterial infection that affects both the gums and bone around the teeth and if this is your problem, the treatment can vary widely depending on how far it has progressed. If the disease has advanced to the point where the periodontal pockets are deep and the supporting bone is lost, further treatment needs to be explored.
If periodontal surgery is needed there are different services to address each issue some of these include pocket reduction, regenerative procedures, crown lengthening, and soft tissue grafts.
Finally, there are other dental services that might be recommended such as laser treatment, dental implants or other cosmetic dentistry services.
