Have you wanted a dazzling smile for as long as you can remember? If so, it’s time to make your dental dreams come true with porcelain veneers. Veneers are one of the easiest, fastest, least-invasive, painless and popular ways to ditch a ho-hum grin and start flashing a beaming, beautiful megawatt smile.

What Are Porcelain Veneers?

Porcelain veneers are custom made ultra-thin shells (or gloves) made of medical-grade ceramic porcelain or resin composite materials. This material reflects light and so closely resembles natural teeth, it’s almost impossible to tell you are wearing veneers!

Veneers are fitted over and bonded onto the front surfaces of existing teeth and can change the color, size, shape, positioning and length of your teeth ̶ essentially, veneers can correct virtually any aesthetic problem. With proper care and hygiene, they can last for up to 15 years before they need replacement. Perhaps that’s why, according to the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry (AACD), porcelain veneer procedures have increased by 250 percent over the last five years.

Which Dental Problems Can Porcelain Veneers Fix?

Veneers are an elegant solution for:

• Chipped teeth
• Broken teeth
• Discolorations
• Staining
• Gaps between teeth
• Worn-down teeth
• Misaligned teeth
• Uneven teeth
• Irregularly shaped teeth
• Unsightly fillings
• Poorly positioned teeth

Do Porcelain Veneers Require Extensive Dental Work?

No. In fact, given the dramatic results they produce, porcelain veneers are one of the easiest and quickest ways to transform a problem smile into a perfect smile. Here’s what to expect during treatment:

• Initial visit for a consultation and x-rays
• Buffing a small amount of enamel from each tooth to prepare the surfaces for veneers
• Impressions are taken and sent to a lab where they are used to prepare the veneers
• Temporary veneers are placed to cover your teeth until the permanent work is completed
• Teeth are cleaned prior to veneer application
• Veneers are fitted over your teeth and secured permanently with dental cement
• A laser hardens the cement quickly
• Follow up visit to check the fit and appearance of veneers

During the buffing process, only about half a millimeter of tooth enamel is removed. We may apply a local anesthetic if you have sensitive teeth. After impressions are taken, it can take 7-14 days for your veneers to come back from the lab. When they are ready, we will fit them onto your teeth and evaluate the fit and color before permanently affixing them. You will have a week or two to adjust to the fit and feel of your new teeth before returning to our office for a follow up visit.

Is The Process Of Getting Porcelain Veneers Painful?

Not usually. Most patients find the procedure painless and non-intrusive. However, we do recommend oral conscious sedation if you have sensitive teeth, are uncomfortable with dental treatments in general or if it is a lengthy treatment appointment to help you relax and feel comfortable.

Will I Still Get Cavities In Teeth Covered With Porcelain Veneers?

Teeth treated with porcelain veneers are actually less likely to get cavities than untreated teeth. Although cavities may still develop at the point where the veneer meets the tooth, a well-practiced dental hygiene program can significantly reduce the possibility of cavities. Brushing and flossing two or three times every day with an ultrasonic brush will go a long way toward keeping tooth decay at bay. You should also have your teeth examined by a dentist and cleaned by a hygienist every three to four months. If you’re concerned about cavities, steer clear of sugary beverages like energy drinks, sodas and sports drinks.
